Dear Donald,
I was glad to get your letter. I didn't send you the check to apply on your bond. I sent it thinking you might need a little ready money. I want you to write me if you need money at anytime to buy things you want. I will be glad to send you anything you want if you will write and let me know what it is. I have ??? up your ?? and it will be here for you when you come home. Donald drop me a line as you as you get this and let me know how long you think you will be there. Things are looking quite good across the water but, Donald, it's liable to take quite a while yet. I don't look for it to end this year.
I saw your picture and I though you looked rather thing. You must take good are of yourself for there is lots of work for you to do when you come back.
Baby [niece] has not been a bit well the last few days. She is real thin. Robert [nephew] is fine. He read your letter to me and he sure was proud of it. I have no opposition for office so I guess I'll pull through. I wish you could be in Des Moines with me. You would enjoy it and it would be worth lots to you. The Legislature convenes Jan 19th and will be in session anywhere from ninety to 120 days.
Charley and Alice were down Saturday. They asked about you. They would appreciate a card from you.
Donald I will ??? care of what you owe at the bank so you needn't think of it. If you owe anything anywhere else let me know. I settled your bill at ??? I don't want any of them to think they have to wait until after the war if you owe anyone. If you do be sure and let me know.
We have been having fine weather for some time. The corn is drying out in fine shape.
Write when you can.
With love, Dad
