10 October 1918 Biwabik
Dear Don:
Got a letter from you this noon and I must say I do appreciate your old letters. As for the fudge, I may steal some sugar off the school and make you something this p.m. Its this way, we haven't a boarding house or anything yet and we are doing light housekeeping. You see it takes all of our sugar allowance to exist on.
The kids are raising the devil in the Assembly but I have to get this letter written as its Edythe and my day "at home" so all I have time for after school is to do the dishes from all day and then we get dinner and then more dishes.
From Duluth to Virginia, we read and ate peanuts and when we got in Virginia we went to the Ormond Hotel to eat. There was a fellow Edythe had known in Fargo and he paid for our dinners and then took us to the movies. He was cute and a regular fellow direct from North Western and is practicing in Virginia. Edythe says he can simply make a piano talk. He said he would come over the same time Kelly Schneck comes down so maybe we will have a regular time yet. They have both enlisted.
Today Edythe got a letter from "Bolly" *(her man) his name is Ray Bolsinger and bBollie is his nick name. He is to be transferred to the south somewhere and won't be sent across for sometime. I'm as sure as anything that when he does he will send for Edythe and they will be married. I told her I'd bet my life that Christmas will be the finis for her stay in Biwabik. That's my luck! She's absolutely the only girl up here that I care a whoop for. In a way she seems so young and then again she doesn't. You spoke right when you said the "Quill" for we are together constantly. They call us the Siamese twins.
Hot lunches start this noon but JE won't let the teachers come this year and I won't make a cut. All these nutty kids want to do is drink cocoa for 3 cts per glass and I'm paying 13 cts per quart so you can see how much I'm making on that.
Oh ??? I ever get into a big school system or something where I can operate a cafeteria or tea room or something of the kind. [Leone eventually has a tea room back in Mason City.]
By this time you must have received the sweater. That candy probably wasn't much good - like everything else purchased in Biwabik - but just wait until I can get some sugar.
I'm not going home Christams unless you would happen to get a furlough at that time. If you don't and Dad offers to pay my fare I will go to M.C. for Christmas and on to Camp Funston (if you are still there) I'm willing to pay the fare from M.C. to Kansas to chat with you, but I couldn't make the ?? from here down. Of course I can see the old man doing it. Wonder how many Liberty bonds he took in the Fourth drive.
Next Friday night is the teachers Reception. I'd rather they'd get a move on and provide a place to eat rather than spend money for orchestra & punch. Seems like I've filled up quite a few lines for really not having anything to talk about.
I'm going down and make some salad dressing for for dinner tonight. It's Pinkie & my turn and I haven't thot of anything especially good and it has to be prepared on electric grills.
Later,
Am waiting for a crazy sixth grade to come in and slop around in some hot chocolate.
Just finished making my salad dressing and I hope the aroma is piercing JE's office. I'll make the stab at fudge one of these fine days.
I bought a Liberty bond but only a #50 bond. Couldn't take more until I get a few of my debts paid.
Here come the little darlings so I must draw this to an abrupt ending.
Much love,
Leone
